Ways to Avoid Developing Low Self-Esteem to Your Child

Parents have the primary role to develop a child while s/he grows up. The child's belief, fears, feelings, perceptions, and ideas depend on how parents respond on things around him or her and how parents teach the child to acquire experiences everyday.

And if the parents dedicate themselves to keep their child on the right and correct path, there is a good chance that the child will grow up with high self-esteem, and in turn, high self-confidence and self-worth; three of the most important characteristics that the child must develop to face the world freely.

So how then can parents prevent their child from developing low self-esteem?

Here are the things you can do:

· Act as an adult

This does not mean that you become cruel to them. When we say, "act as an adult", this means that you have to be a good role model to them. Never let the child see that you are pessimistic about your limitations and abilities. Never project that you are harsh on yourself. Develop your self-esteem so that you yourself are a good model to follow. Remember this: The child mirrors adults. Everything that children see from you will definitely be visible on them. So make sure everything he sees on you is all good.

· Show affection and be spontaneous

Physical affection is the best way to show that your child is being loved. And the feeling that the child is being loved will certainly boost his self-esteem. Hug, kiss and other forms of personal and physical affection will be much of a great help. Give positive remarks and good praises if your child has done something good. Give remarks and praises honestly and frequently without exaggeration. Kids can feel if the words come from your heart.

· Let them grow up in a safe and nurturing environment.

A child cannot stand on his own so make sure that you create a safe environment where he can live and express freely. Never give the child reasons to be threatened. Arguing in front of the child could make him feel withdrawn and depressed. The child also needs to be respected. Protect your child from abuse. Trouble with peers and problems with school may affect your child's self-esteem. Proper handling of these issues would be a great help.

· Make venue for constructive experiences where the child can participate freely

Involve your child activities that involve cooperation and not competition. This is because competition opens up the chance of failure and defeat. A child who is exposed on these at the early age would become hesitant and reserved that would develop to low self-esteem.

· Watch what you say

Negative words would not boost your child's self-esteem. If your child failed, never give him reasons not to try again. Acknowledge his effort rather than blame him from failing. Encourage him, yes, but not to the extent that you push him so hard.

· Inaccurate beliefs and thoughts should be identified and redirected

Child learns through his senses so there are points where inaccuracy would happen. Make sure that you identify those things and redirect them to the right thoughts and beliefs. You have to consider that the child needs your help to acquire correct knowledge since he cannot decide what is right and wrong.
