The Problem of Violence: Why Help Solve Low Self Esteem Issues
Nobody can deny the fact that we are now living in a very violent world. When you go to very big cities, you might notice that people always avoid meeting the eyes of strangers. This is because of the fact that today one wrong look can get yourself killed.
Violence is very prevalent among the culture of today's youth. Everywhere you see the "gangsta" culture being promoted. Teenagers bathe in the concept of living and dying by the gun. One of the most prevalent reasons that teenagers today immerse themselves in the culture of gangs and violence is low self esteem.
As John Irving wrote in one of his novels, The Hotel New Hampshire, "there's nothing more dangerous than a gang with an inferiority complex." Teenagers today need help with low self esteem. You see, they try to cover up for their insecurities by beating up or even killing other people. They join groups because those groups make them feel superior. But talk to one member alone, and you will realize just how unsure of themselves teenagers actually are.
Low self esteem leads to violence in a lot of cases. You see men beating up their wives and vice versa (yes, women beat up husbands too). Persons who beat up their spouses do so in order to feel superior. They think that by beating up their partners, they show the world who is boss. Actually, most people do it not to show the world, but to prove to themselves that they are not weak. These people need help with low self esteem simply because they need to be shown that bringing other people down does not take them any higher up.
Have you noticed that each generation seems to be more violent than the generation before? Think about this: in the past, the main problem with the youth was the fact that they rallied and grouped together to sing songs for peace. They did unusual activities and were branded "hippies". Nowadays, however, teenagers and other young people group themselves into gangs, fight over territories and kill for such a trivial little thing as the manner of walking of a person. Some gangs just tend to look for targets and any person can be singled out for a beating just because he or she was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
You see, people with low self esteem often take out their problems on others. More often than not, the people they take it out on are those people under them. Parents take it out on children. Bosses take it out on employees. Husbands take it out on spouses.
Of all the cases of passing on low self esteem, the parent-child issue seems to be the most prevalent. Parents with low self esteem often beat their children in order to cover for their insecurities. Take this example: Some parents, when they knock over a glass and break it, blame their children for distracting them. Thus, the clumsiness of the parent becomes the child's fault. This leads to low self esteem for the child. This makes the child think that everything is his or her fault. A child treated like this needs help with low self esteem before he or she repeats the cycle and passes on the problem to his or her children.
The culture of violence must end now. People with low self esteem need help.
