The Main Causes of Low Self Esteem

How exactly does low self esteem develop in a person? While many people know about the warning signs and different effects of low self esteem, few people take the time to learn about the causes of it. However, you need to understand that learning about the cause of low self esteem can be crucial to breaking the problem.

So what are the causes of low self esteem? To tell you the truth, low self esteem actually develops even before you know that there is such a thing as self esteem. During childhood, a number of events can cause a person to have low self esteem.

1) Abandonment - Abandonment is one of the most common causes of low self esteem. You see, people who have been abandoned as children tend to ask themselves, "why?"

Since the people who abandoned them cannot answer their questions, they are not given the assurance that the abandonment was not caused by them. Abandoned children often heap the blame on themselves. They feel as though they were inadequate to be loved. They look at other children with their parents and think "I did not deserve that". This mentality stays on through adulthood and leads to various relationship problems.

Because they were abandoned, two things happen: (a) the person feels that he or she will never deserve love, and stop searching or (b) the person will always keep looking for ways to make themselves into someone deserving to be loved, and never be contented with who they are.

2) Abuse - Whether physical, verbal, sexual or psychological, this cause of low self esteem takes the worst toll on the person. The person always looks for reasons within their being as to why they suffered such abuse. More often than not, they come up with the reason that there must be something wrong with them.

People who have been abused go over the scenarios repeatedly, looking at the actions that they made, and think, "if only I hadn't." This leads to people being overly vigilant as to their actions. In the end, this is what makes an obsessive-compulsive person.

3) Excessive criticism - This cause of low self esteem can actually be found everywhere. In the parent-child relationship, the parent sometimes overly criticizes a child. The reason for this can be the fact that a parent was suffering from a problem, and unintentionally heaped it on the child. If you are a parent, you need to know that this can be severely damaging to a child's self esteem. Whenever you criticize a child for something, ask yourself if the criticism you are about to give is because of the child's actions or is it because of your personal issues?

Employers also have a way of overly criticizing their subordinates that leave the people feeling that they are indeed incompetents. Remember that just because you have someone whom you can take your frustrations out on, does not mean you really have to do it.

4) Serious personal illness - Some people feel that an illness or disability limits the respect they deserve to have. This makes them obsessive about the things they do. They strive to be perfect as to gain the respect of people. They need to be reassured that they are accepted for who they are and they are not limited in any way by their disease or disability.
