The Fate of the Child with Low Self Esteem

Low self esteem can develop in such a time, when you do not even know the concept of self esteem. Childhood is when most of our subconscious traits are developed. This means that a child with low self esteem will likely carry it to adulthood without realizing it.

A child with low self esteem needs help to realize that not everything is his or her fault. He or she needs to realize that no person can succeed at trying to be perfect, and it should not be expected of him or her. However, that child with low self esteem needs to realize that he or she can accomplish marvelous things if he or she puts his or her mind to it.

Why is it so urgent that people help a child with low self esteem? You see, a problem like this is easier to overcome right at the beginning. Waiting until that child is an adult could prove to have very negative consequences. For one thing, convincing an adult that he or she has low self esteem could be very hard.

There are also different things that could happen to a child with low self esteem.

1) Becoming an over achiever - Some parents may find this prospect as something to cheer about but be assured that high grades do not always mean being good parents. A child with low self esteem often becomes an over achiever because he or she feels inadequate as a person. They may want to keep getting high grades because they feel that their parents will not love them without their high grades.

They may be the best at their schools but do you really care about their grades, or are you focused on their happiness? What does being a good parent mean? Do you want an over achiever who would commit suicide because of a B on a report card? Think about it.

2) Addiction - Drug addiction, smoking and alcoholism is the most common sign of a child with low self esteem. People with low self esteem turn to these things in order to cover up for what they think are unacceptable mistakes. Here are some reasons why a child with low self esteem takes up a vice:

a) Illusions - Addictive vices are often turned to by children with low self esteem simply because they help them forget their self-imposed mediocrity. They try to escape their lives and reality by turning to chemicals that affect their minds and muddle their consciousness. A child with low self esteem often builds a fantasy world where he or she feels better about his or her self. As children grow older, they tend to need more and more help in supporting their self-built fantasies. As a result, they turn to drugs or alcohol in order to reach a state of mind where fantasies are easier to accept.

b) Society - Sometimes, a child with low self esteem clings to addictive vices because he or she feels that vices improve one's image. You see, society often condones people with questionable lifestyles and even makes heroes out of villains. Our culture of commercialization often tends to promote bad products and thus, promote lifestyles that are not really good for you. Having a vice often makes a child with low self esteem gain the attention he or she wants. As such, they cling to these vices to make themselves appear "cool".
