Low Self-Esteem Among Teenagers: What are the roots of the problem

High school years are said to be the happiest days in one's life. Here, teenagers can experience everything, and it means everything. These are the years where social skills are developed. Thus, high school is the time where teenagers make friends and relationships and party during nights. However, not everyone experiences the fun and excitement of high school. There is a certain number of the teenager population that chooses to be alone or forced to be alone due to circumstances. There are the teenagers who cannot mingle with other people or who are afraid to open up themselves to others. In other words, these are the teenagers with low self-esteem.

Low self-esteem not only affects the teenager's social life but also his personal life and performance. He could not present himself properly to other people because he is always conscious of what others might say to him, or worst, against him. He is also afraid that others will not accept who he is or the other way around. He could not perform properly to realize what he wants to do and achieve. As a result, he chooses to be alone and live alone carrying the feeling of lack of self-confidence in himself.

This is caused by several factors:

Family - The early stage of child's development is very crucial. So it is important that a child will grow up in a healthy environment where s/he feels safe, secured, loved, and cared. Exposure to abuse on the other hand will make the child withdrawn and afraid. If not given enough attention, this will continue up to the teenage years that would terribly affect his or her normal and social life. In other words, low self-esteem is developed at the early stage of life so premium care must be done in order to raise a teenager with healthy self-esteem.

Peer - Teasing and bullying are two of the more common reasons why teenagers develop low self-esteem from peers. Calling names that pertain to person's physical imperfection creates an enormous impact on teenagers who want to join a group. If the teenager experiences this, the feeling of acceptance and self-worth is decreased. The teen would then choose to stay away from groups. This would create severe effects on his or her social life as well as social standing.

Ethnicity and Gender - In some places, discrimination happens on teenagers with race, color or belongs to a gender that is not accepted. This is another reason why some teenagers develop low self-esteem.

Community -The old proverb says, "it takes a whole village to raise a child". But the village must be a healthy one to raise a child with healthy self-esteem. Sadly, many communities today are unhealthy and unfitting to a child. This definitely degrades their self-esteem.

Physical appearance - Teenage years are the period of experimentation on the way he or she projects on others. So, if the person feels that he or she is the ugly ducking among the crowd, he or she will not develop a healthy self-esteem. Physical appearance hinders a teenager to make friends due to the fear that he or she might not be accepted to the group or become the shame of the group. This would make a teenager live on his or her own or join others who have low self-esteem as well.
