Helping Someone with Low Self Esteem

Self-esteem is the person's internal emotion, beliefs, and feeling towards himself. These emotions, beliefs, and feeling become the expression of the personality of oneself. Self-esteem may be a temporary psychological condition or a permanent way of life. Self-esteem can be a particular to a dimension or universal in extent. Self-esteem can be high or low.

Therefore, self-esteem is emotional.

From this, you can see that a person who suffers from low self-esteem must start from within; removing all the negative things that are caused by low self-esteem.

But since low self-esteem resides within a person, it has to come out. And the outlet is on the way he deals with others and the way he treats himself. This would cause him to have several characteristics related to low self-esteem. Some of these are unwillingness to assume responsibilities, unwillingness to take on challenges, less social conformity, lack self-confidence, overly conscious about what image they project on other people, emotional confusion, anxiety, blaming everything on themselves, and depression.

Usually, the causes of low self-esteem are deeply rooted on the person's childhood experiences. Thus, help should come from professional therapist. But that does not mean you cannot help. Here are the things you can do to someone with low self-esteem:

Listen and understand - A person with low self-esteem is usually afraid to share their lives since he sees others as critics. Listening to this person will enable him to realize that not everyone is looking negatively towards him. The power of listening without giving advice or judgment will definitely help a person to improve his self-esteem. Do not rush by offering fixed solution to the problem. Having someone that listens would be enough for him. Understand that what he is going through is hard. This would improve your treatment to him that would definitely change his perception to you and to other people.

Facilitate to help them keep moving - A problem may be evident without a need for words. Most of the time, this problem can be changed immediately. Rally round to solve this problem at once before it gets worst.

Help him to seek help - Oftentimes a person with low self-esteem does not seek help. It is either he does not recognize his condition or he is conscious but does not want others to know that he is suffering. Talk to them and help them to seek help. A professional can handle well this situation. Lead him to the experts.

Encourage him to be positive - It takes time for a person to develop low self-esteem and it will take time to change this. Let him work and focus on the positive side. Be encouraging and give correct guidance.

Respect his space - He may or may not talk to you about his problem so you must respect this. Do not force him to talk to you if he does not want to. Let him open up freely. Little by little, work his way to open up other things. This will let you realize things that make him what he is. This will give you further understanding. This understanding will reflect on the way you treat him. Take note that a person with low self-esteem lacks self-confidence and trust. Once you show that there is no need to have these, he can open up himself to others as well.
