Characteristic of Individuals with Low Self-Esteem

There are several causes why people have low self-esteem. This could be the cause of an internal conflict happening to a person. It can also be caused by the physical appearance, child abuse, inferiority, gender, social status, race, and many more. People with low self-esteem show almost the same character patterns. These are:

Less social conformity - People with low self-esteem cannot make a good social life. This is because they see themselves inferior compared to other people around them. They cannot stand out because they don't even know how. Less social conformity can lead to other characteristics or could be an effect of one characteristic. But ultimately, the root of the problem is having low self-esteem. All the characteristics of people with low self-esteem work this way. They are interrelated to one another thus solving one means solving all.

Lack self-confidence - Since people with low self-esteem do not know or have little skill on social life, they also lack self-confidence. Fear of being criticized can be one of the main reasons why they lack self-confidence. They don't seem to realize their strengths and abilities.

Unwillingness to take on challenges - Another more dominant characteristic of people with low self-esteem is the unwillingness to take on challenges. This can be rooted to the fact that they lack the right amount of self-confidence to be brave enough to face even minor things that would come their way.

Unwillingness to assume responsibility - Due to the lack of social conformity and self-confidence, people with low self-esteem would not be seen to lead a group. They could not handle groups properly and execute tasks in a manner that is expected from them. They just hide on the shadows of others where people could not notice them. They cannot trust themselves to do things correctly.

Underachiever - Since people with low self-esteem could not show what they got due to the lack of trust to themselves, they tend to hide everything and keep them on their own. They just cannot shine out among the crowd. They cannot achieve things because they are afraid to show what they have.

Emphasizing the negative - With all the things they do, people with low self-esteem could not see the positive. They only see the negative. This would cause them to recognize that they are weak and incapable. Emphasizing too much on the negative angle and removing the view from the good things is another characteristic very evident to people with low self-esteem.

Overly conscious about what image they project on other people - People with low self-esteem are more concerned on what people think of them than what they should do. Oftentimes, this attitude transcends on fear of committing mistakes. Fear of failure and criticism is another way of saying it. As a result, they could not do function normally for they think that all the eyes are staring at them and measuring their every move, which by the way is entirely their false impression.

Other characteristics of people with low self-esteem are the inability to view the self fairly (often unfair to themselves), unhappy, feeling of isolation or exclusion, inability to accept praises, neglecting oneself on the possibilities to grow and improve, emotional confusion, anxiety, blaming everything on themselves, depression, and worry that they might treat others badly among others.
